  • The SASTRA Ramanujan Prize for 2022 will be awarded to Yunqing Tang, Assistant Professor with the University of California, Berkeley, U.S.A.
About Research
  • Display a remarkable combination of sophisticated techniques, in which the arithmetic and geometry of modular curves and of Shimura varieties play a central role.
  • Her results and methods are bound to have a major impact on future research in this area.
  • Her most recent joint work with Frank Calegari and Vesselin Dimitrov on modular equations is of great significance and also has ties with Ramanujan’s own work.
About Award
  • The award was influenced by Srinivasa Ramanjuan in a broad sense. It was instituted by the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA) in 2005 with a cash prize of $10,000.
  • It is presented annually to individuals aged 32 and below, who made outstanding contributions in the field of mathematics.
About Srinivasa Ramanujan
  • Srinivasa Ramanujan FRS, also known as Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar, was an Indian mathematician who lived during British rule in India.
  • Despite having almost no formal training in pure mathematics, he made significant contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions, including solutions to previously unsolvable mathematical problems.
  • He received his early education and schooling in Madras, where he was enrolled in a local school. His interest in mathematics developed at a young age and was mostly self-taught.
  • While in England, Ramanujan and Hardy published a number of research papers.
  • He published around 30 research papers over a three-year period.
  • Hardy and Ramanujan devised a new method, now known as the circle method, to derive an asymptomatic formula for this function.
  • His first paper, a 17-page work on Bernoulli numbers, appeared in the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society in 1911.
