World Habitat Day 2022

  • World Habitat Day is observed on the first Monday of October, which marks the beginning of Urban October. This year it falls on October 3, 2022.
  • Theme-  World Habitat Day- 'Mind the Gap. Leave No One Behind and No Place Behind’.
Significance 
  • World Habitat Day is celebrated worldwide every year to bring attention to the state of our towns and cities, as well as the basic right of all people to adequate shelter.
  • World Habitat Day was first celebrated in 1986 in Nairobi, Kenya, with the theme ‘Shelter is my right’. Today is a reminder to the world that we all have a role to play in shaping the future of our cities and towns.
  • In 1985 the United Nations designated the first Monday of October every year as World Habitat Day.
  • The idea is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right of all to adequate shelter. It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of human habitat.
  • The focus is on the growing inequalities and challenges in cities and human settlements.
  • These are the problems that have been aggravated due to what the UN calls triple Cs: Coronavirus (COVID-19), Climate, and Crisis.
  • These triple Cs have hampered the progress made against poverty.
