Fiji to host 12th World Hindi Conference in 2023

  • Fiji is the first country in the Pacific to hold the 12th World Hindi Conference. 
About World Hindi Conference 
  • Over 1,000 experts in the Indian language, including academics, writers, and laureates, would attend the three-day conference in the Fijian city of Nadi with the goal of promoting Hindi around the world.
  • The Indian and Fijian governments will co-host the event, according to P S Kartigeyan, who was appointed the island nation’s High Commissioner in January 2021.
  • In Fiji, Hindi holds a very important significance.
  • Fiji-Hindi is one of the three official languages, and because the Girmit brothers and sisters immigrated here 130 years ago, it has a very distinct history.
  • Karthigeyan further appreciated the role that Fijian academics played in the advancement of Hindi not only in Fiji but also throughout the world thanks to the Fijian diaspora.
Hindi in Fiji
  • Hindi is taught in primary and secondary schools and Universities of Fiji and Fijian Hindi is enshrined in the constitution of Fiji as an official language.
  • It started from 1879 to 1916 when the British took Indian labourers to work in the sugarcane fields. The numbers were around 60,000.
Hindi Language
  • Hindi got its name from the Persian word Hind, meaning 'land of the Indus River'. Turk invaders in the early 11th century named the language of the region Hindi, 'language of the land of the Indus River'.
  • It is the official language of India, English being the other official language.
  • Hindi is also spoken in some countries outside India, such as in Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago and Nepal.
  • Hindi in its present form emerged through different stages, during which it was known by other names. The earliest form of old Hindi was Apabhramsa. In 400 AD Kalidas wrote a romantic play in Apabhramsa called Vikramorvashiyam.
  • The modern Devanagari script came into existence in the 11th century.
