Delhi Metro launches its first-ever train control system

In News
  • In a first for a mass rapid transit system in India, an indigenously developed signalling technology was launched recently for operations on the Red Line of the Delhi Metro.
About i-ATS
  • India’s first-ever Indigenous Automatic Train Supervision System (i-ATS) has been developed by a joint team of DMRC and Bharat Electronics Limited, under the government of India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives for metro rail transit systems.
  • The i-ATS system was formally launched on the Red Line from the Operations Control Centre in Shastri Park.
  • The i-ATS is a computer-based system that will manage train operations including basic functioning such as running and halting. It will reduce the metro’s dependence on foreign vendors for metro operations.
  • The development of i-ATS is a huge step forward in CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) based signaling system for the metro railways since the ATS (Automatic Train Supervision) is an essential component of the CBTC signaling system.
  • The i-ATS technology’s flexibility is what makes it useful for the operations of other rail-based systems such as the Indian Railways. The technology has been developed in a way to be flexible enough to work with different signaling vendors’ systems with suitable changes.
