145 bird species spotted in Sundarban during first bird festival

  • As many as 145 species of birds were spotted in the Sundarban during the first two-day bird festival held this week in the world’s largest mangrove delta.
Sunderban Festival
  • The first-ever festival was organised by the Sundarban Tiger Reserve (STR) division of the West Bengal Forest Department, where several teams visited different areas inside the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve.
  • The Bird Festival provides baseline data on Sundarbans' bird species diversity.
  • The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in 2021, had recorded 428 bird species in the Sundarbans which is one-third of all the avian species (derived from birds) found in the country.
  • Birds like Eurasian curlew, lesser sand plover and brown hawk owl were spotted. At least seven species of kingfishers, including the black-capped kingfisher were also seen.
Sunderban Biosphere reserve
  • The Sundarban spreads over India and Bangladesh.
  • The Indian part of the delta is located at the southern tip of West Bengal and is home to around 100 tigers and other animals such as spotted deer, estuarine crocodiles, otter, dolphin and venomous snakes.
  • Sundarbans is the largest delta and mangrove forest in the world.
  • The Indian Sunderbans, which covers 4,200 sq km, comprises of the Sunderban Tiger Reserve of 2,585 sq km is home to about 96 Royal Bengal Tigers (2020) is also a world heritage site and a Ramsar Site.
  • The Indian Sunderbans is bound on the west by river Muriganga and on the east by rivers Harinbhahga and Raimangal.
  • Other major rivers flowing through this eco-system are Saptamukhi, Thakuran, Matla and Goasaba.
